Chlorine vs. Your Hair

blogs (13)

The natural oils within our hair help to keep it healthy. When chlorine – a chemical which can strip the natural oils from our hair – is introduced into the mix, it can result in hair that is brittle and dry, leading to split ends and other hair damage.

Chlorine can affect some of us more than others. Those who are more susceptible to the effects of chlorine include frequent swimmers and those with naturally dry hair, fine hair and colored, bleached or chemically treated hair, as well as those with hair that is already damaged.

Aside from wearing a swimmers cap, there are some things you can do to protect your hair from chlorine, one of which is to rinse your hair with tap water before entering the pool. What happens when you do that is that hair absorbs the tap water, making absorption of pool water afterwards minimal.

Applying swim spray can also help block chlorine from penetrating hair. It works for all hair types, but can be especially beneficial for those with blonde hair.

You can also rinse or thoroughly clean your hair with a sulfate-free shampoo followed by conditioner after swimming. Clarifying shampoos will provide an even deeper clean. Leave-in conditioners and adding coconut or jojoba oil can provide an added layer of protection.

Additionally, when chlorine mixes with certain minerals in pool water, it can add a green tint to bleached and lighter hair shades of hair. If green is not your color, you can always rely on the hair professionals at Swanky Salon to help get your hair healthier and back to a shade of your choosing!
