Tips for Healthy, Beautiful Nails

Beautiful nails are head-turners, a great way to accessorize and simply a lovely part of a well-groomed person. Here are some dos and don’ts for proper nail care…

Clean nails are important. So always practice good nail hygiene.

Consistent trimming can ensure that nails are less prone to breakage. So keep nails regularly trimmed.

Moisturize nails and cuticles, but otherwise keep nails dry to prevent bacteria underneath.

Wear gloves when performing household chores that might damage nails, such as washing dishes and using harsh chemical cleaners. This includes wearing gloves while gardening. That can actually help keep you safe from Florida critters too!

Avoid biting nails AND biting and (since our cuticles protect our nails) picking at cuticles.

File in one direction, replacing emery boards regularly to avoid bacterial infections. Also use high quality nail polish, like the professional polish used at Swanky Salon. High quality nail polish remover is also recommended, as is applying a protective nail hardener to strengthen nails and a top coat to help prevent chipping.

It is also imperative to get your manicures and pedicures from licensed, experienced professionals whom you trust to properly sanitize their tools, like the ones at Swanky Salon!

Plus, keep in mind that it is not normal for nails to become discolored (not talking about polish here, but the actual natural nail bed, which should be a healthy pink, not yellow) or thickness. Nor should healthy nails separate from skin. You also never want to see any bleeding, swelling or experience any pain around your nails.
